I saw a Salvation Army a couple weeks ago in Gresham that looked closed. Salvation Army might not be the greatest example, though, because they tend to do weird things with their assets to "save money" or whatever (i.e. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/03/nyregion/thecity/03evan.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=salvation%20army%20gramercy%20park&st=cse)

My partner and I were in the Goodwill on the south side of Pittsburgh today looking for another desk and not only did they not have a desk, or a writing table, but their furniture section was empty save for a single kitchen chair, a broken wardrobe, and an ottoman.
I said, Holy cow! Caty said, Things are worse than I thought.

I've heard that donations have gone down sharply, prompting these closings. It's doubly tragic, since the shops won't be there for people with straightened budgets and the revenue stream won't be there for charitable works.
