When I visit a place I like to pretend I live there. From 9/25-10/2, I lived in Brooklyn — half the week in Carroll Gardens, half in South Slope. All this week, I’ll be writing about last week. On Monday, my lovely hostess had some clothes to sell, so we visited Beacon’s Closet. She made [...]

When I visit a place I like to pretend I live there. From 9/25-10/2, I lived in Brooklyn — half the week in Carroll Gardens, half in South Slope. All this week, I’ll be writing about last week. On Saturday I took the train from the airport to Maker Faire, stashed my luggage in the [...]

Just back from a couple of writing-and-catching-up days with a friend. She lives far enough away from the city that it always feels like a retreat when I visit. She’s also notably non-obsessed with the Internet and pop culture, an excellent reminder for me that it’s important to remain capable of having conversations that don’t [...]

…is this: A glow-in-the-dark release cord you can pull to open the trunk from the inside. I am sure this was not the actual reason for its development, but it’s hard to look at the graphic without thinking of all the movies wherein someone is trapped in that part of a vehicle.

Notable because this is the first time I’ve seen a small self-produced flier posted on a phone pole here, as opposed to the professionally produced ones large enough to be visible from cars. Those tend to advertise religion, payday loans, weight loss, and/or overcoming addiction. It’s not a walking town. What I like about this [...]
