Portland, you sure are pretty today. The full moon last night wasn’t bad either, but I was driving when it was at its most grapefruit-like, and so I did not attempt to capture it. Did any of you? (I realize you’re not all in Portland, but I know a bunch of you are…)

Thanks, everyone, for all your lovely congratulatory messages! Here are a couple of photos from the reception after the Oregon Book Awards, at the Portland Art Museum. Linda Zuckerman and I have just been busted by a security guard for attempting to pose while, ahem, making contact with the statue behind us. Hence the slightly [...]
…and I would sure love to see you at 5 pm Sunday afternoon (the link is to the festival’s Sunday schedule and, warning, for some reason it has music) , when I’ll be reading as part of the Oregon Book Awards Young Adult Literature Showcase. I would invite you to the Oregon Book Awards ceremony [...]
These sidewalks aren’t far from each other.
Do you know, Portlanders, that there is an I-205 bike path? I discovered it today and felt that I had learned one of the city’s secrets. I rode along, saying “On your left, pardon me, thank you” to the occasional pedestrians who looked a bit surprised that a cyclist was actually using the path, listening [...]
That crud I had, summer cold 2.0., I was already recovering. But thirteen miles worth of biking today really made me feel better. I can feel myself turning into yet another one of Portland’s bicycle evangelists, a gleam in my eye, chainring heart sticker on my messenger bag, one pant leg forever rolled up. I [...]

However, I must regretfully also mention that curb cuts are present only inconsistently, and that this, while inconvenient and slightly painful for a timid cyclist, is absolutely [...]
1. Idly browse YouTube for bands covering your favorite band. 2. Discover the Heathers version of “This Year”: 3. Immediately go to their MySpace. 4. Realize that OMG! They’re coming to Portland! Really soon! 5. Go. I need to talk a little about the fantastic venue, The Coop. For those of you who’ve read Rules, [...]
Hey didn’t we just do this? Yes we did. (Relatively speaking.) Here we go… Cannot believe how many people managed to cram into Cosmic Monkey for the trophy awards & Comic Art Battle. I was happy to meet Matt Silady and Kirsten Baldock (comics writer, librarian, and bartender — I knew we’d get along) and [...]
That’s what Becky Flynn kept calling us, everyone who was standing in the rain for Basic Rights Oregon‘s Rally to Defend Equality. Here’s some background on why we were out there. I don’t go to a lot of rallies. I once read an interview with Alison Bechdel wherein she confessed that her Dykes To Watch [...]
