The cab rolled down the hill a little ways before he lunged for the emergency brake. When it stopped, I put my suitcase in the trunk. The cabbie laughed a panicky little laugh. “First customer!”
“Sara is the name of many woman in Africa,” he said later. “My daughter, she is Sara.”
The dispatcher came on. “711? She has a pet…No, I don’t know what kind of pet, it didn’t say. 711, do you take animals?”
I spent the rest of the ride wondering what animal it was.

Here in the Twin Cities there has been many stories of late of cabbies refusing to take passengers with seeing-eye dogs due to religious reasons. It’s nice to see that this particular cab company at least checks ahead of time.
